Can you think of a better way to start the week than an indulgent breakfast at Café Murano? We certainly can’t, so were excited to officially launch the 2018 S.Pellegrino Young Chef competition at Angela Hartnett’s Covent Garden restaurant yesterday morning.
Joined by Angela, who doubles up as this year’s Head Judge and Chef Mentor, and the rest of our UK & Ireland Michelin starred jury Alyn Williams, Phil Howard and Mickael Viljanen, we were also pleased to welcome back last year’s mentor Claude Bosi and our 2016 UK & Ireland Winner George Kataras, who currently resides at Fera in Claridges. Quite the line up for breakfast, which explains the RSVP rush by our trade, consumer and national media guests, as well as the plethora of aspiring young chefs and industry personnel.
On the menu was Italian charcuterie, crispy coppa on toasted ciabatta with fried egg and smoked salmon with curly kale, datterini tomatoes and seasonal mushrooms. Is your mouth watering yet? Well we haven’t even got to the platters of homemade chocolate canoli and croissants. Let’s just say, the room of foodies were well and truly satisfied!
In between mouthfuls, the top table of esteemed chefs took part in a lively QnA, answering questions on where they take inspiration, the best dishes they’ve tasted and what they will be looking for in the next UK & Ireland S.Pellegrino Young Chef.
Applications are open until the end of April, so don’t waste any time telling your young chef pals to enter. Who knows, they could be joining our very own Thorne Addyman in the battle to be crowned S.Pellegrino Young Chef 2018 at the global final in Milan next June. Watch this space…
